A truck that pulls, wanders, or eats steer tires is telling you something — and it is usually not the alignment setting. We find out what is actually moving before we touch an adjuster.
You cannot align a front end that has play in it
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Alignment sets angles. It cannot hold them if something in the steering or suspension is worn, because the geometry shifts the moment the truck is loaded and driven. Set perfect numbers on a truck with a loose kingpin and the truck leaves the rack in spec and is out of spec by the end of the week.
That is why an alignment that "did not take" is such a common complaint, and why we inspect the front end first every time. If something is worn, it gets repaired and then aligned. The order matters, and it is the same argument that runs through our diagnostic work generally — measure before you adjust.
Heavy truck alignment is not car alignment with bigger numbers
Most alignment shops are set up for passenger cars, and the differences on a commercial truck are not cosmetic.
- Solid front axles use kingpins, not ball joints. A kingpin carries the entire steering knuckle on the axle beam, wears differently, and is checked differently. Play there is both an alignment problem and a DOT out-of-service item.
- Camber is usually not adjustable. On a beam axle it is manufactured into the axle. If camber reads out of spec, something is bent — that is a repair, not a setting.
- Caster is set with shims on leaf-sprung axles, and it is what gives a heavy truck its return-to-center and highway stability. A truck that wanders and feels vague at speed is frequently a caster problem, not a toe problem.
- There is more than one axle to get right. Steer, drive, and trailer axles all have to point the same way. A car has no equivalent of a tandem scrubbing against itself.
- The vehicle has to physically fit. Length, weight, and turning space rule out most general alignment shops before the measurement starts.
Dog tracking: when the front end is not the problem
If a driver has to hold the steering wheel off-center to travel straight, the instinct is to blame the steer axle. It is usually the opposite. The truck is dog tracking — the drive axle is not square to the frame, so the truck moves slightly crab-wise and the driver steers against it to keep the truck in the lane.
That angle between where the drive axle points and where the frame points is the thrust angle, and it is the reference every other angle should be set from. Align only the steer axle on a dog-tracking truck and you have set the front wheels straight relative to a rear end that is pointed somewhere else — which is why the steering wheel often comes back more crooked than it went in.
On a tandem there is a second version of the same problem: if the two drive axles are not parallel to each other, they fight, and they scrub tires continuously in a way no amount of front-end work will fix.
What we check before the rack
- Kingpins — vertical and lateral play, the wear alignment cannot survive
- Tie rod ends, drag link, and steering arms — play, boots, and bent components
- Steering gear and shaft — lash and slop that reads as vague steering
- Wheel bearings and hubs — looseness that mimics alignment symptoms exactly
- Springs, shackles, bushings, and U-bolts — a shifted spring moves the axle
- Shocks — the usual cause of cupped tires blamed on alignment
- Tire condition, matching, and inflation — mismatched or underinflated tires pull on their own
- Brake drag — a dragging brake produces a pull that no alignment corrects
- Frame and ride height — evidence of impact, sag, or a previous repair that changed the geometry
If all of that is sound, the alignment is straightforward. When it is not, we tell you what needs doing first and what it will cost before anything is adjusted.
Reading the tires
Tires keep a written record of what the truck has been doing, and it is usually more reliable than the complaint that brought it in.
- Feathering — a sharp edge on one side of each tread rib. Classic toe.
- One shoulder worn — camber, toe, or an axle that is habitually overloaded.
- Cupping or scalloping — shocks, balance, or something loose. Usually not alignment.
- Both steer tires wearing fast but evenly — often inflation practice, tire spec, or duty cycle rather than geometry.
- One tire wearing far faster than its pair — worth checking brake drag and bearings before assuming alignment.
- Trailer tires outpacing tractor tires — look at the trailer's own axles.
The mistake worth avoiding: replacing tires without asking what killed the last set. New tires on an unaligned or worn front end simply restart the same clock, at commercial tire prices. If you want the longer version, we wrote up what we check before aligning a diesel truck.
When to have it aligned
- The truck pulls, wanders, or feels vague at highway speed
- The steering wheel sits off-center while travelling straight
- Steer tires are not making the life you expect
- After any steering or suspension repair — tie rods, kingpins, springs, bushings, steering gear
- When new steer tires go on, so they start straight
- After a hard curb strike, pothole, or job-site rut the driver remembers
- After a suspension or ride-height change
Alignment for fleets
For one truck, alignment is a repair. For a fleet, it is tire budget. Steer tires on a commercial vehicle are expensive, and a truck that scrubs them off early does it every single set until somebody measures why. Multiply that across the fleet and it is one of the larger avoidable line items in the maintenance budget.
There is a diagnostic signal in it too: several trucks wearing fronts the same way is not several coincidences. It is usually a route, a load practice, an inflation practice, or a spec — one cause with one fix, rather than six tire bills.
On a fleet account we fold alignment and front-end checks into preventive maintenance and schedule them with annual DOT inspections so a truck comes in once instead of three times. Inspecting front ends and reading tire wear can happen at your yard — the rack work is what has to come to us, and knowing which trucks actually need it is most of the value.

Bent axle beams and frame or chassis straightening are specialist work with dedicated equipment. We will identify it, tell you plainly that is what you are looking at, and point you somewhere that does it properly rather than aligning around a problem that needs straightening. Common questions
Do you align semis and heavy trucks, not just pickups?
Yes — light-duty diesel pickups, medium-duty box trucks, and heavy commercial trucks. This matters more than it sounds, because most alignment shops are set up for cars and cannot physically take a loaded commercial vehicle. Call with the truck and configuration and we will confirm what we can get on the rack before you make the trip.
My truck pulls but the alignment was just done. Why?
Usually because the front end had play in it when it was aligned. Alignment sets angles; it cannot hold them if a kingpin, tie rod end, drag link, or wheel bearing is worn, because the geometry moves as soon as the truck is loaded and driven. A pull that returns within weeks is the classic signature. The fix is repairing what is loose, then aligning.
What is dog tracking, and will a front-end alignment fix it?
Dog tracking is when the truck travels slightly crab-wise — the body is angled to the direction of travel, and the driver holds the steering wheel off-center to go straight. It comes from the drive axle not pointing where the frame points, which is a thrust angle problem. A steer-axle-only alignment will not fix it and often makes the off-center wheel worse. It needs the rear axles measured and corrected.
Why can you not adjust camber on my truck?
On a solid front axle, camber is built into the axle beam itself and is not an adjustment. If camber is out of spec on a beam axle, either the beam is bent or something mounting it is. That is a specific repair, not a setting, and we will tell you which one you are looking at rather than quietly aligning around it.
How often should a commercial truck be aligned?
There is no universal mileage. Align after any steering or suspension repair, when new steer tires go on, after a hard curb or pothole strike, and whenever a pull or an off-center wheel shows up. Beyond that, the honest trigger is tire wear: if steer tires are not making their expected life, something is scrubbing them and it is cheaper to find out than to keep buying tires.
Does alignment really affect fuel economy?
Yes, though it is not the headline benefit. Misaligned wheels are dragged slightly sideways for every mile, which is rolling resistance the engine has to overcome. The bigger and more measurable cost is tire life — a scrubbing steer tire can lose most of its service life, and on commercial tires that dwarfs the fuel difference.
Do trailers need alignment too?
They do, and it is routinely skipped. A trailer with misaligned axles dog-tracks behind a perfectly aligned tractor, scrubs its own tires, and pushes the tractor sideways in a crosswind. Can you tell what is wrong from how the tires are worn?
It narrows it a great deal. A feathered edge across the tread points at toe. Wear on one shoulder points at camber, toe, or a chronically overloaded axle. Cupping or scalloping usually means shocks, balance, or something loose rather than alignment at all. We read the tires first, because they record what the truck has actually been doing.
Is worn steering a DOT inspection problem?
Yes. Excessive play in steering components, including kingpins and tie rod ends, is inspectable and can put a truck out of service. That is why we check the front end before aligning rather than after — the same wear that stops an alignment from holding is the wear an inspector is looking for. We can handle the annual DOT inspection at the same visit.
Can you align our fleet without taking trucks off the road all week?
Yes. On a fleet account we schedule alignments alongside preventive maintenance and DOT inspections so trucks come in once rather than three times, and we can inspect front ends and tire wear at your yard to decide which units actually need rack time. Alignment needs the rack, but knowing which trucks need it does not.
