Buying a Surplus Humvee in Texas: What's Actually on the Market
Texas is one of the better places in the country to buy a surplus HMMWV, and one of the easier places to end up with the wrong one.
Part of that is geography. Red River Army Depot in Texarkana is where a large share of the Army’s HMMWV rebuild work happened, and Central Texas has no shortage of installations feeding vehicles into the disposal pipeline. Trucks show up at auction here in volume. What most buyers don’t realize is how little variety is actually in that volume — the market looks broad and is in fact three or four configurations wearing a lot of different paint.
Here is what is really out there, and what we would buy if it were our money.
Almost everything on the market is an M1097
The M1097 is the heavy variant — reinforced frame, heavier springs and shocks, upgraded cooling, and a payload rating in the neighborhood of 4,400 lb against roughly 2,500 for the original M998. It was built to carry shelters, comms gear, and weapons stations without folding, which is exactly why so many were produced and why they’re what survived to the auction block.
If you’ve been watching listings and wondering why you rarely see a plain M998 anymore: most of that inventory is gone. The early base trucks were sold off in the first wave of surplus releases years ago, and a large share of what stayed in service got pulled into rebuild programs and came back out as heavy-variant or reman trucks. Chasing an original M998 is a collector’s errand, not a buying strategy. It isn’t the truck you want anyway — the base chassis is the one that most objects to the accessories people bolt on.
So: assume you’re buying an M1097. The real question is which M1097.
Most of them are R1 remans out of Red River
The single most common truck on the Texas market is a reman — listed as an R1 — rebuilt in the early 2000s under the Army’s recapitalization program, much of it at Red River. These came out of the depot with the 6.5L naturally aspirated engine, which was the upgrade over the older 6.2L, mated to the 3-speed automatic.
A reman is not a bad truck. It went through the depot as a stripped chassis and came back with a rebuilt drivetrain, and in a lot of cases the sheet metal and wiring got attention that a field truck never saw. If the price is right, an R1 is a perfectly reasonable thing to own.
But understand what the 3-speed means before you buy one. A HMMWV is geared extremely low from the factory — that’s what the geared hubs and portal-style final drives are for — and the 3-speed’s top gear is a straight 1:1. There is no overdrive. The practical result is a truck that is pleasant at 45 mph, tolerable at 55, and loud, busy, and thirsty above that. If your plan involves any highway at all, that transmission is the thing you’ll resent.
One more warning about remans specifically: data plates and actual hardware don’t always agree on a depot-rebuilt truck. Parts were pulled from a pool. Verify the drivetrain by looking at it, not by reading the plate.
The one to look for: the M1097A2
If you want the best combination of drivability and maintainability, the truck to hold out for is the M1097A2.
The A2 is the heavy variant with the 6.5L naturally aspirated engine and the 4-speed electronically controlled automatic (the 4L80-E), plus a higher-output charging system. That 4-speed is the whole argument. Fourth gear is an overdrive, and in a vehicle geared as low as this one, an overdrive is the difference between a truck you can actually drive somewhere and a truck you trailer. Engine speed drops, heat drops, fuel economy improves from “bad” to “acceptable,” and the noise stops being an endurance test.
The 6.5L NA half of that pairing matters just as much, for a reason most buyers get backwards: the boring engine is the right engine here. Naturally aspirated means no turbo to cook, no boost plumbing to leak, less heat rejected into a cooling system that was never generous to begin with, and a much shorter list of things that strand you. It is not fast. Nothing about a Humvee is fast. What it is, is serviceable — and it shares enough DNA with the civilian 6.2/6.5 world that parts are findable and any competent diesel shop can work on it.
The A1 designation, for reference, is the earlier configuration — you’ll find 6.5L NA A1s, but they carry the 3-speed. If a listing says A1 and the seller says 4-speed, go look at the transmission yourself. One of those two claims is wrong, and on a reman truck it’s a coin flip which.
The ECV trap
The up-armored trucks — the ECV (Expanded Capacity Vehicle) chassis and the armored variants built on it — command a serious premium at auction. They look like the most truck for the money. They are usually the most expensive mistake available.
Three problems, in order of how much they’ll cost you:
The turbo 6.5 is working for a living. The 6.5L’s design lineage is naturally aspirated; the turbocharged version is an adaptation of that architecture rather than an engine designed around boost from the start. Bolt that into a vehicle carrying several thousand pounds of armor, in Texas, and you’ve asked a marginal cooling system to manage significantly more heat than it was ever comfortable with. Cooling complaints on these are not a defect you can fix once — they’re a condition you manage.
Everything downstream is carrying the armor too. Brakes, halfshafts, geared hubs, ball joints, and suspension components all wear at a rate the parts were not chosen for. An armored truck eats consumables.
Parts are genuinely harder to get. Armored-specific components, the turbo-engine-specific pieces, and the systems unique to the ECV don’t have the civilian parallel that makes the NA trucks easy to keep running. You will wait, and you will pay.
Buy one if you specifically want an armored truck and you have accepted the ownership cost that comes with it. Don’t buy one because it seemed like the premium option — for driving and maintaining, it is strictly worse than a plain A2 at a lower price.
What actually breaks
Across every variant, the same short list accounts for most of what comes through our door:
- Hot-stall on the 6.5L. The classic symptom: the truck runs fine, gets heat-soaked, dies, and then restarts once it cools. That is the injection pump’s electronic driver — the PMD/FSD — failing when hot. It’s well understood and fixable, and it’s the first thing we check on a 6.5 that quits warm.
- Cooling, always. Radiators packed with dust and debris, tired fan clutches, and coolant nobody has touched. On a vehicle with this little airflow margin, cooling maintenance isn’t optional.
- Geared hubs and halfshafts. The hubs leak and the halfshafts wear, particularly on trucks that were run hard or carried weight. Check for seepage at every corner.
- Inboard brakes. The brakes sit inboard at the differentials rather than out at the wheels. They work fine — but access is poor, so a brake job takes longer and gets neglected longer, which means you often find a small problem that has been growing quietly.
- 24-volt electrical. Two batteries, a 24V system, and decades of field repairs. Corroded grounds and previous owners’ wiring are a real diagnostic category on these trucks.
- Glow plugs and hard cold starts — routine, but a truck that has sat in a yard for two years will need them.
The paperwork is the part nobody warns you about
This is the single biggest surprise for first-time buyers, and it has nothing to do with the mechanicals: many surplus HMMWVs are sold with a bill of sale and an off-road-use designation rather than a clean title. What that means for registering and plating one in Texas depends on how the specific vehicle was released, what documentation came with it, and rules that have changed more than once.
We are a repair shop, and we’ll say plainly that we do not advise on titling or registration — take that question to the Texas DMV and, if there’s money involved, to someone who does this for a living. But settle it before you bid, not after. We have met more than one owner with a running truck they can’t legally drive on the road.
Before you bid
- Confirm the drivetrain with your eyes: 6.5L NA and a 4-speed is the combination you want.
- Ask whether it’s a reman, and treat the data plate as a starting point rather than a fact.
- Look for coolant and gear-oil seepage — hubs, halfshafts, radiator, water pump.
- Check whether it has sat. Long-parked diesels need fuel system, glow plugs, batteries, and usually brakes.
- Budget for a full fluid and filter service and a brake inspection on day one, whatever the listing says.
- Sort out the title question first.
