Two makers, one truck
Step vans confuse people because they are body-on-chassis vehicles. The familiar boxy body is usually a Morgan Olson or Utilimaster. Underneath it sits a completely separate commercial chassis, and that is where the engine, transmission, brakes, and everything we work on actually live.

We service the chassis and drivetrain. Bodies, shelving, and refrigeration units are a different trade — we will tell you who to call rather than guess at it.

What actually fails on a route truck
Step vans wear differently from anything else on the road, because the duty cycle is extreme in a specific way: short trips, constant stops, long idles, and rarely enough sustained speed to get anything properly hot.
- Emissions systems, first and worst — DPF loading and failed regens are the defining complaint
- Brakes — hundreds of stops a day does what you would expect
- Charging and batteries — long idles, lift gates, and constant door cycling
- Doors and steps — the highest-cycle mechanical parts on the vehicle
- Cooling systems — idling in Texas summer with no airflow is its own test
- Oil contamination — short trips never boil moisture and fuel out of the oil
The odometer lies on these trucks. A step van with 40,000 miles can have more engine hours than a highway tractor with 200,000. Service intervals set by mileage will under-maintain a route fleet badly — which is why we set PM intervals by duty cycle instead.
Keeping a route fleet on the road
The operating problem with route trucks is that every one you pull for service is a route somebody has to cover. So the work should come to the trucks: on-site service at your yard by appointment, typically outside route hours, with pickup and delivery when a job genuinely needs our bays.
On a fleet account we track each unit's interval by how it actually runs, schedule DOT inspections before they come due, and you can see the whole fleet's status in the FleetGood portal rather than calling for updates.

Do you work on step vans and walk-in vans?
Yes — the chassis, engine, drivetrain, brakes, and electrical. That is where nearly all the mechanical work lives. Body work, shelving, and refrigeration units are a different trade and we will point you to the right shop for those rather than pretend otherwise.
Why do step vans have so many emissions problems?
Duty cycle. A step van doing a delivery or service route makes constant short trips with long idles between them, which never builds the exhaust heat a DPF needs to regenerate. Soot accumulates until the truck derates. It is the single most common complaint we hear from route fleets, and it is fixable — proper cleaning, a check for an upstream cause like an injector or EGR fault, and a maintenance interval built around the route rather than the odometer.
Can you service our route fleet without pulling trucks off route?
That is what on-site service is for. For fleet-account customers we run preventative maintenance and many repairs at your yard by appointment, typically outside route hours, so vehicles are not taken out of rotation one at a time. Work that needs a lift or alignment rack we can collect with concierge pickup and delivery instead.
What engine is in our step van?
