Power Stroke service at an independent Austin shop
Power Stroke engines are one of the two platforms we see most — in F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks, Excursions, and the medium-duty chassis that share the engine. Each generation fails in its own way, so we diagnose from the data, not from a guess: live scan data, pressure and fuel-return testing, and a look at the parts that generation is actually known to lose.
Power Stroke generations we service
- 7.3L (1994.5–2003) — The one owners keep forever — HEUI injectors, IDM and glow-plug systems, cam-sensor no-starts, and UVCH connectors. No emissions system to go wrong, which is most of why they are still on the road.
- 6.0L (2003–2007) — EGR coolers, oil coolers, head studs, FICM, and the STC fitting — plus the stiction that makes them crank and stumble. Symptoms overlap heavily here, so testing beats guessing.
- 6.4L (2008–2010) — Compound twin turbos, radiators and coolant leaks, cracked-up-pipes, and regeneration problems that end in fuel dilution of the oil.
- 6.7L, 1st gen (2011–2014) — The Scorpion. CP4.2 fuel pump, turbo actuators, and the first Ford-built Power Stroke — a big improvement on what came before.
- 6.7L, later (2015–present) — CP4 fuel systems through 2019, DEF and DPF faults, injector wear, and turbo actuators. 2020-on pairs it with the 10R140 transmission.
- 3.0L Power Stroke (2018–2021 F-150) — The half-ton V6 diesel. Discontinued, but plenty are still running and they need a shop that knows them.
- F-600, F-650 & F-750 — The medium-duty Fords — Class 5 through 7 — running the same 6.7L. Earlier F-650/750 came with Cummins power instead. See medium-duty diesel.
What we see fail on Power Stroke
- EGR cooler and oil cooler failure — Classic 6.0L: white smoke, coolant loss, and overheating. We test before we condemn parts — see cooling system repair.
- Injector stiction and misfire — Rough cold starts, a miss under load, and hard starting — diagnosed with live data and return testing rather than a set of injectors on spec.
- Turbo and VGT faults — Lost boost, sticking vanes, and actuator codes on 6.0L, 6.4L, and 6.7L. See turbocharger service.
- Emissions and regeneration — DPF loading, DEF quality and injector faults, and derates that strand a working truck — DPF cleaning and DEF & SCR.
- CP4 fuel-system failure — On 2011–2019 6.7L, the CP4.2 can send metal through the entire fuel system. That is a whole-system job, not a pump — we scope it honestly before you spend anything.
- P228F and fuel pressure codes — Low rail pressure on 6.7L. Sometimes a regulator or sensor, sometimes the early warning of a failing CP4 — which is exactly why it gets tested rather than guessed at.
- Head gaskets on 6.0L — The head-stud conversation. We tell you honestly whether the engine is worth it, because on a high-mile truck it sometimes is not.

Keeping a Power Stroke on the road
- Fuel filters on the interval — Both of them on the 6.7L. Fuel is what lubricates a CP4, and dirty fuel is the cheapest way to a very expensive failure.
- CCV filter — The crankcase ventilation filter on 6.7L — cheap, routinely skipped, and the cause of oil leaks people misdiagnose as seals.
- Oil and the right spec — Low-ash (CK-4) oil, and the correct capacity — the 6.7L takes more than people expect. Ash is what ends a DPF.
- Coolant condition, not just level — Additives deplete, and depleted coolant is how 6.0L and 6.4L cooling problems start.
- Let regens finish — Interrupting active regens repeatedly is how a filter plugs early and how fuel ends up diluting the oil on a 6.4L.
- Transmission fluid on severe duty — If it tows, it is severe duty whatever the manual says — see transmission repair.

The independent alternative to the dealer
Out of warranty, there is very little on a Power Stroke that has to happen at a Ford dealer. Diagnostics, injectors and fuel systems, EGR and oil coolers, turbos, head studs, and emissions repair are all independent-shop work, and the labor difference on a big job is substantial. What the dealer is genuinely right for is an open recall, a factory warranty claim, and a small number of proprietary programming operations — and we will tell you that up front rather than keeping the truck while we work it out. In warranty, use the dealer; it is what you paid for.

Do you work on 6.0L Power Strokes?
Yes — the 6.0L is one of the most common trucks in our bays. We handle EGR coolers, oil coolers, head studs, FICM and injector problems, and full engine work. We test to confirm the cause before quoting the repair, because on a 6.0L the symptoms overlap.
My 6.7L Power Stroke is in a derate. Can you help?
Yes. Derates usually trace back to the emissions system — DEF quality or injector faults, DPF loading, or a sensor. We pull the codes and freeze-frame data, test the system, and tell you what it will take to clear it properly rather than resetting it and sending you out.
Are you a Ford dealer?

What does code P228F mean on a 6.7L Power Stroke?
It is a low fuel rail pressure fault — the engine is not seeing the pressure it commanded. Sometimes that is a pressure regulator, a sensor, or a restriction, and sometimes it is the early warning of a failing CP4.2 high-pressure pump. The difference matters enormously, because a failing CP4 can send metal through the entire fuel system and turn a pump job into injectors, rails, and lines. We test rather than guess at this one.
What is the CCV filter and does it really need changing?
It is the crankcase ventilation filter, and yes. On the 6.7L it is a genuine maintenance item — a plugged one raises crankcase pressure, which pushes oil past seals and can cause leaks that look far more expensive than they are. It is inexpensive and routinely skipped, which is why we check it.
Which Power Stroke is the most reliable?
The 7.3L has the reputation and earns it, mostly because it predates emissions equipment entirely. Among modern engines the 6.7L has been strong, with the CP4 fuel pump on 2011–2019 as its main weak point. The 6.0L is the one with the reputation for trouble, though a properly sorted one — studs, EGR delete-free cooler work done right, oil cooler addressed — can be a genuinely good truck. We will give you a straight answer about the specific truck in front of us rather than a generation-wide verdict.
Is it worth fixing a 6.0L, or should I move on?
It depends on the truck and what has already been done. A 6.0L with good compression, a solid body, and a known history is usually worth sorting properly. One that needs head studs, an oil cooler, an EGR cooler, injectors, and a turbo all at once may not be, and we will tell you that plainly rather than doing the work and letting you find out. Bring it in and we will scope it honestly before you commit.
