The electric part isn't the part that wears out
Fleets adding electric trucks are usually told maintenance costs will fall, and for the powertrain that's true — no oil changes, no fuel filters, no DPF, no DEF, no regens. Then the first year happens and the bills show up somewhere else entirely: tires, brakes, alignment, and suspension.
Everything below the high-voltage system is still a truck, and an EV is aheavier truck delivering instant torque. Those two facts drive most of what an electric fleet actually spends on maintenance.
What we service on an electric truck
- Brakes — pads, rotors, calipers, and air brake systems on heavier units
- Tires — repair, mounting, balancing, and replacement, and they wear faster here
- Alignment — heavy-duty alignment, which matters more with the extra weight
- Suspension and steering — springs, air bags, shocks, bushings, hangers, and front-end components, all carrying more load than the diesel version ever did
- Air ride and levelling — height control valves, sensors, and compressors working harder under battery weight
- Air systems — dryers, valves, and leaks on air-braked units
- Hydraulics — pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, fluid and filters on dumps, packers, and bucket bodies
- PTO and ePTO systems — the drive side changes on an EV; the hydraulic system it powers does not
- Liftgates — high-cycle, high-failure, and the thing that stops a delivery route dead
- 12-volt electrical — the low-voltage system that still runs lights, controls, and accessories, and still fails
- Lighting and wiring — including the seven-way and trailer connections
- Cab HVAC — driver comfort systems, which in a Texas summer is not optional
- Chassis, body, and fabrication — mounts, brackets, and the welding that goes with them
- Trailers — whatever the EV is pulling is unchanged
- Annual DOT/FMCSA inspections — required regardless of what moves the truck
What we don't do: high-voltage systems. Battery packs, traction motors, inverters, DC-DC converters, and onboard charging hardware run at voltages that require specific training and equipment to work on safely. Those go to the manufacturer or a dealer with HV-certified technicians. We'd rather tell you that up front than take the job and find out. Everything else on the vehicle, we handle.
Three things that surprise EV fleet operators
Tires become the biggest line item. Battery weight plus instant torque through the same contact patch wears tires considerably faster than the diesel equivalent, and punishes alignment harder. Operators who budgeted for maintenance savings are frequently surprised by where the money actually goes.
Brakes fail from disuse, not wear. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so pads last — but rotors rust and pit, and calipers and slide pins seize because nothing is cycling them hard enough to keep them free. That is the opposite of the failure mode the maintenance schedule assumes, and it is why EV brakes still need inspecting on a schedule.
Suspension takes the weight. A pack adds thousands of pounds low in the chassis. Springs, air bags, bushings, and front-end components all work harder for it, and they wear accordingly.
Hydraulics and PTO work don't change
This is the part most overlooked when a vocational truck goes electric. A dump body, a refuse packer, a bucket or utility body, a liftgate — all of it still runs on hydraulics, and hydraulics wear, leak, contaminate, and fail exactly as they always have.
What changes is only how the pump gets driven. Instead of an engine-driven PTO, an electric truck uses an ePTO — an electric motor turning the same hydraulic pump. The cylinders, hoses, valves, fittings, reservoir, fluid, and filters downstream of it are ordinary hydraulic components, and they are ours.
- Hydraulic pumps, valves, and controls — including PTO and ePTO engagement faults
- Cylinders and hoists — dump bodies, packers, and bucket booms
- Hoses, fittings, and leaks — the highest-frequency hydraulic repair there is
- Fluid and filter service — contamination is what kills hydraulic systems, and it is preventable
- Liftgates — hydraulic and electric, and among the highest-cycle equipment on a delivery vehicle
A liftgate failure stops a route as completely as a dead battery does. On delivery fleets it is one of the most common causes of a unit being out of service, and it has nothing to do with the powertrain — which is precisely why an EV fleet still needs a shop.
Mixed fleets are the normal case
Almost nobody converts a fleet overnight. What actually happens is a handful of electric units running alongside diesels for years — and splitting that across two vendors means two schedules, two invoices, two sets of records, and nobody with the whole picture.
On a fleet account we handle the diesels completely and the electric units for everything outside the high-voltage system, with PM scheduled by duty cycle, DOT inspections tracked before they come due, and one history per vehicle regardless of what powers it. We can also work at your yard, which matters more for EVs than for diesels — a unit that has to be moved is a unit spending range on a shop run.

Common questions
Do you service electric trucks?
Yes — everything on an electric truck that is not the high-voltage powertrain, which is the large majority of what actually needs servicing. Brakes, tires, alignment, suspension, steering, air systems, the 12-volt electrical system, lighting, HVAC, body and chassis work, and annual DOT inspections are all the same work they have always been. We do not service high-voltage battery packs, traction motors, or charging hardware.
Why would an EV need a diesel shop at all?
Because the electric part is not the part that wears out. An electric box truck still stops, steers, carries weight, and gets inspected — and it does all of that harder than a diesel one, because it is heavier. Removing the engine removes oil changes and emissions work. It does not remove brakes, tires, suspension, air systems, or the annual FMCSA inspection.
Do electric trucks still need a DOT inspection?
Yes. An annual FMCSA inspection is required on a commercial vehicle regardless of what propels it, and the brake, steering, suspension, tire, and lighting requirements are identical. The trailer behind it needs its own inspection too. We perform them on electric and diesel units alike.
Do EV brakes really last longer?
The pads usually do, because regenerative braking does much of the slowing. That creates a different problem instead: rotors that rust and pit from underuse, and calipers and slides that seize because they are not being cycled hard enough. We see brake systems on EVs fail from disuse rather than wear, which is not what the maintenance schedule anticipates and is exactly why they still need inspecting.
Why do electric trucks go through tires so quickly?
Two reasons that compound. Battery packs make them substantially heavier than the diesel equivalent, and electric motors deliver full torque instantly. More weight and more torque through the same contact patch wears tires faster and punishes alignment harder. Tires and alignment are frequently the largest recurring maintenance cost on an EV fleet, which surprises operators who budgeted for savings.
What can you not do on an electric vehicle?
We do not work on high-voltage systems — battery packs, traction motors, inverters, DC-DC converters, or onboard charging hardware. Those run at voltages that require specific training and equipment to work on safely, and we would rather tell you that plainly than take the job. For high-voltage faults you need the manufacturer or a dealer with HV-certified technicians. Everything else on the vehicle, we handle.
Do you service hydraulics and PTO systems on electric trucks?
Yes, and it is one of the least-discussed reasons an EV fleet still needs a shop. A dump body, refuse packer, bucket boom, or liftgate runs on hydraulics whatever moves the truck. What changes is only how the pump is driven — an ePTO motor instead of an engine-driven PTO — while the cylinders, hoses, valves, fittings, fluid, and filters downstream are ordinary hydraulic components. Can you fix a liftgate on an electric delivery van?
Yes. Liftgates are among the highest-cycle equipment on any delivery vehicle and a very common reason a unit goes out of service — and a liftgate failure stops a route as completely as a flat battery does. It has nothing to do with the powertrain, which is exactly the point: the electric part is rarely what puts these vehicles in a bay.
Can you look after a mixed fleet of diesel and electric?
