A Cummins will run a long time, which is exactly why the ones we see are usually working hard with real miles on them. We diagnose the fuel system, air path, and emissions as a system, because on a high-mileage Cummins the fault is often downstream of what actually broke.

Cummins platforms we service

  • 5.9L 12-valve (1989–1998) — The 6BT. Mechanical, and the reason the badge has the reputation it does — P7100 pump on 1994–98, plus the "killer dowel pin" worth addressing on any engine that is already apart.
  • 5.9L 24-valve (1998.5–2007) — VP44 injection pumps on 1998.5–2002 and their lift-pump-related failures; CP3 from 2003, which is the more robust arrangement.
  • 6.7L (2007.5–present) — Turbo actuators, EGR and DPF loading, CP3 then CP4.2 fuel systems, and injector wear. The first Cummins with a full emissions system.
  • Generations, plainly — 1st gen 1989–93 · 2nd gen 1994–2002 · 3rd gen 2003–2009 · 4th gen 2010–2018 · 5th gen 2019 on. Owners search by generation, so it is worth knowing which you have.
  • 4BT — The four-cylinder B-series — swaps, equipment, and older commercial chassis. Still turning up regularly.

What we see fail on Cummins

  • Lift pump and low fuel pressure — Starves the injection pump and takes expensive parts with it — the classic VP44 killer on 1998.5–2002. Worth testing before it does.
  • Turbo actuator and VGT sticking — Lost power, boost codes, and a turbo that won't hold commanded position. See turbocharger service.
  • EGR and DPF loading — Short-route trucks that never complete a regen end up derated and down on power — DPF cleaning.
  • DEF and SCR faults — On 2013-on trucks, and a common cause of a derate that gets blamed on the engine. See DEF & SCR repair.
  • Injector wear and return imbalance — Rough idle, white smoke, and hard starts — confirmed with return-flow testing rather than replaced on suspicion.
  • Fuel-system contamination — When a pump goes metallic, half-measures come back. We scope the whole system before quoting.
  • Killer dowel pin (12-valve) — The pin backs out of the block and can go through the timing gear. Cheap to address while the front cover is off, catastrophic if it lets go.

Keeping a Cummins on the road

  • Fuel filters, both stages — Fuel lubricates the injection pump. On a 6.7L this is the cheapest insurance you can buy against a four-figure fuel-system bill.
  • CCV filter — The crankcase ventilation filter — skipped constantly, and the hidden cause of oil leaks blamed on seals.
  • Lift pump pressure check — Especially on 1998.5–2002. A weak pump is a warning; a failed one takes the VP44 with it.
  • Valve lash on the OEM interval — Quietly costs power and fuel as it drifts, and is easy to defer forever.
  • Oil to the right spec — Low-ash CK-4. Ash is the thing that ends a DPF, and an engine using oil ashes one fast.
  • Coolant condition testing — Additives deplete and depleted coolant corrodes liners from the inside — see cooling system repair.

The independent alternative to the dealer

For an out-of-warranty Ram, an independent shop handles essentially everything: diagnostics, lift pumps and injection systems, injectors, turbos, EGR, and emissions repair. The dealer remains the right call for open recalls, factory warranty claims, and certain proprietary programming, and we will say so plainly when that is the case. The practical difference is usually scheduling and the conversation — you talk to the technician who actually looked at your truck, and you get told what it needs rather than what is on a menu.

Common questions

Do you service both Ram pickups and medium-duty Cummins trucks?

Yes. The same B-series family shows up in Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and in medium-duty box and service trucks, and we work on both — including the air brakes, chassis, and DOT inspections that the commercial trucks need.

My Cummins keeps regenerating and losing power. What causes that?

Constant regeneration usually means the DPF is loading faster than it can burn off — often from short routes, but it can also be an injector, turbo, EGR, or sensor problem pushing extra soot. We diagnose the cause instead of just cleaning the filter and handing it back.

Should I replace my lift pump before it fails?

On the platforms where a failing lift pump can take the injection pump with it, replacing a weak one is cheap insurance. We test fuel pressure and tell you honestly where yours stands rather than selling you a pump you do not need yet.

What is the killer dowel pin, and does my engine have it?

It affects 12-valve 5.9L engines. A dowel pin in the front of the block can work its way out and drop into the timing gear case, and if it goes through the gears the damage is severe. Addressing it is inexpensive when the front cover is already off for other work, which is why it is worth asking about before you approve a timing-related job rather than after.

What is the CCV filter on a 6.7 Cummins?

The crankcase ventilation filter. It is a real maintenance item, not an upsell — when it plugs, crankcase pressure rises and pushes oil past seals, producing leaks that get misdiagnosed as far more expensive failures. It is cheap and frequently skipped, so we check it as part of service.

Which Cummins is the most reliable?

The 12-valve 5.9L has the reputation, and mechanically it earns it — no emissions system and very little electronics to fail. Among modern engines the 6.7L is genuinely durable; most of what strands them is the emissions system rather than the engine. The 1998.5–2002 24-valve is the one to watch, because a weak lift pump can take the VP44 injection pump with it. We will give you a straight read on the specific truck rather than a generation-wide verdict.

Do you work on Cummins generators?

No — we do not take on generator or standby power work. It is outside what this shop is set up to stand behind, so we would rather tell you plainly than take the job. For anything on a truck, equipment, or commercial chassis with Cummins power, we are the right call.
