Unimog owners know the routine: call three shops, get three polite refusals. The portal axles look intimidating, the parts come from Europe, and nothing about the layout matches a domestic truck. But a Unimog is fundamentally a serviceable machine — Mercedes built them to be maintained in the field, and the OM-series engines are close cousins of the Mercedes diesels already in our bays.

On parts: Unimog parts generally come from European suppliers or specialist importers, which means longer lead times and higher cost than a domestic truck. We tell you that up front rather than after your rig is on a lift, and where something can be rebuilt instead of replaced, we will say so.

Expedition and overland rigs

A lot of the Mogs we see are expedition builds with a camper box on the back. We service the truck under the box — engine, drivetrain, axles, brakes, and chassis — and we work around the conversion without touching house systems like solar, water, or interior electrical. If you're prepping for a long trip, a pre-trip inspection is cheaper than a breakdown in a place with no Mercedes parts within 500 miles. Same goes for our EarthRoamer customers.

Common questions

Will you actually work on a Unimog?

Yes. Most shops will not, usually because of the portal axles, the European parts supply, and the unfamiliar layout. None of that is a mystery once you have been under one — the OM-series engines are close relatives of other Mercedes diesels we service, and the chassis is built to be worked on. What Unimog models and engines do you service?

The common ones on this side of the Atlantic: the 404, 406, 416, and 435 series, along with U1300L, U1700, and newer U500 trucks. Engines are typically the OM352 and OM366 inline sixes, naturally aspirated or turbocharged, and OM904/OM906 on later trucks. We handle engine work, fuel systems, cooling, brakes, hydraulics, and driveline.

Can you get Unimog parts?

Usually, though it takes longer and costs more than parts for a domestic truck — most come from European suppliers or specialist importers. We are straight with you about lead times up front, and where a serviceable part can be rebuilt rather than replaced, we will tell you that too.

Do you service expedition and overland conversions?

We service the truck — engine, drivetrain, portal axles, brakes, air and hydraulic systems, and chassis. We do not build or service camper house systems like solar, water, or interior electrical. If your conversion has those, we will work around them and keep the mechanical side sorted.
