EarthRoamer Chassis Service & Repair

Underneath the build it's a Ford Super Duty and a 6.7L Power Stroke — which is exactly what we work on all day.

The truck under the camper

An EarthRoamer is a remarkable expedition vehicle, but mechanically it is a Ford Super Duty chassis with a 6.7L Power Stroke — an F-550 under an XV-LTS, an F-750 under the bigger builds. That is one of the most common drivetrains in our shop, which means the hard part of servicing your rig is not the engine. It is having bays with the height and lift capacity to take a vehicle this tall and this heavy, and understanding how the build changes what the chassis needs.

What we service

  • 6.7L Power Stroke — diagnostics, injectors, CP4 fuel systems, turbo, and emissions
  • Emissions and DEF systems — DPF loading and DEF faults, which heavy, slow-moving rigs are prone to
  • Transmission and driveline — working constantly at high gross weight
  • Brakes — sized for a stock truck, working far harder on a loaded build
  • Cooling systemscritical when you're grinding up a grade at max weight in summer heat
  • Suspension and steering — heavily loaded, and often upgraded components
  • Tires and alignmentheavy-duty tire work and alignment on an expedition-weight rig
  • Chassis electrical — the truck's own systems, not the house

What we don't touch: the house. Lithium battery banks, solar, water systems, propane, and interior electrical belong with EarthRoamer or a camper specialist. We're an independent diesel shop with no EarthRoamer affiliation — we keep the truck underneath running and we stay out of the living space.

Why weight changes everything

A loaded expedition build spends its life near the top of its weight rating. Everything that wears — brakes, tires, suspension, cooling, transmission — is working harder than the same part on a stock truck, all the time. On top of that, these rigs sit for long stretches between trips, then get asked for everything at once. We service them the way that reality demands: assume it's loaded, assume it sat, and check the things that punishes.

Pre-trip inspection before you go

The whole point of one of these is being a long way from anywhere — which is also the worst possible place to discover a cooling problem or a brake issue. Before a long trip we go through the drivetrain, brakes, cooling, tires, suspension, fluids, and emissions system, and hand you a prioritized list: what must be fixed before departure, and what can wait until you're back. We do the same for Unimog and other overland rigs.

Common questions

Can you service my EarthRoamer?

The chassis and drivetrain, yes — and that is where nearly all the mechanical work lives. An EarthRoamer is built on a Ford Super Duty platform with a 6.7L Power Stroke, which is one of the most common engines in our shop. We do not service the camper house systems: lithium batteries, solar, water, propane, and interior electrical stay with EarthRoamer or a specialist.

My EarthRoamer weighs a lot more than a stock F-550. Does that change service?

Yes, and it is the single most important thing to understand about these rigs. A fully loaded expedition build runs near the top of its weight rating all the time, which is hard on brakes, tires, suspension, cooling, and the transmission. We service them on the assumption they are always loaded rather than to a light-duty schedule.

Do you do pre-trip inspections before a long expedition?

Yes, and it is the smartest money you can spend on one of these. We go through the drivetrain, brakes, cooling, tires, suspension, fluids, and the emissions system, and give you a prioritized list — what has to be fixed before you go, and what can wait. Finding a problem here is far cheaper than finding it somewhere with no Ford dealer for 300 miles.

Are you an authorized EarthRoamer service center?

No. We are an independent diesel shop with no affiliation to EarthRoamer. What we offer is deep experience with the Ford Super Duty chassis and 6.7L Power Stroke underneath the build, plus bays and lifts sized for a vehicle this tall and heavy.
