Texas Summer and Diesel Cooling Systems: What Fails First
A cooling system that was merely adequate in March becomes a breakdown in July. Central Texas summers run long and hot, and a loaded truck climbing a grade on US-290 or sitting in traffic on I-35 with the A/C on is asking everything of a system that has no margin left.
Nothing in this article is exotic. That is rather the point — the failures that strand trucks in August are almost always things that were findable in spring.
Why heat is what actually kills diesels
Diesel engines tolerate an enormous amount of abuse. What they do not tolerate is heat. Warped heads, cracked liners, scored cylinders, and failed head gaskets all trace back to a cooling system that stopped doing its job — and the repair bill for the engine is many times the repair bill for the cooling system that would have prevented it.
What fails, roughly in order
Radiators. Two ways: blocked outside or scaled inside. Trucks working construction sites, ranch roads, or anywhere dusty pack their fins solid — the radiator looks fine and flows almost no air. Internal scaling from tired coolant is the quieter version of the same problem.
Fan clutches. A fan clutch that no longer locks up will get a truck through winter without complaint and overheat it the first hot day under load. Classic symptom: temperature is fine on the highway, climbs when you slow down or start pulling.
Water pumps. Weeping seals and worn bearings. Often audible before it is visible.
Thermostats. Stuck closed overheats immediately and obviously. Stuck open is subtler — the engine runs cool, which sounds harmless but hurts fuel economy and, on emissions-equipped trucks, means the exhaust never gets hot enough to regenerate the DPF properly.
EGR and oil coolers. On several platforms — the 6.0L Power Stroke especially — these are the usual suspect. A leaking EGR cooler pushes coolant into the exhaust, which is why you can lose coolant steadily with nothing on the ground under the truck.
Coolant itself. Coolant does not last forever. The additives that stop corrosion deplete, and depleted coolant lets radiators and liners corrode from the inside out.
Signs to act on before August
- Temperature climbing under load, on a grade, or while towing
- Losing coolant with no puddle underneath
- White smoke and a sweet smell from the exhaust
- Oil that looks milky, or coolant like chocolate milk
- Heater blowing cold
- A fan that you never hear engage
The one rule
Do not drive an overheating diesel to get it home. Every mile after the gauge climbs is doing damage that costs many times what the original fault would have. Shut it down, get it towed, and pay the small bill instead of the large one.
What we do about it
